The annual games design competition, Dare to be Digital, has received an “overwhelming” number of applications, the event’s organiser has said.
Abertay University received a rush of contestant applications from over 70 different universities around the world.
Academic institutions as far out as Canada and India have applied, the university said.
“Among the many applications, we are delighted to see a good mix of PC and mobile platform titles, while many have the ambition to work on an iPad, Windows Phone 7 or Kinect game,” said event project manager Elaine Russell.
“We even see Facebook games on the list. This shows how much the students are keeping in pace with the changing market.”
Teams from the UK, Irish Republic, China, India, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden are fully funded for Dare to be Digital. Accommodation is paid for, and an allowance is available for living costs.
Entrants take part in an intense nine-week game design course at the respected University of Abertay in Dundee, Scotland. The teams are tasked with building a working prototype in that time frame, with the results going under the watchful eyes of the industry at the Dare Protoplay event.
Three winners are each announced, and go on to compete for the unique BAFTA ‘Ones to Watch’ award.
