PS4 did outsell Xbox One in the US in September as PSN enjoys record month

Contrary to previous predictions, PS4 DID outsell Xbox One in the US in September.

Analyst Michael Pachter had said earlier this week that Microsoft had last month sold 325k units in the region and Sony 250k units.

However, while neither NPR nor Sony or Microsoft have released actual numbers, NPD has confirmed PS4’s victory and Sony has said that September was the biggest month in 2014” so far for PS4 hardware sales, with Geoff Keighley claiming that unit sales had tripled month-on-month.

That makes it the ninth consecutive month that PS4 has bettered Xbox One in the territory.

Sony said that September was also the biggest month in PlayStation Store history”, with Destiny breaking PSN records for the number of day one sales, pre-orders and week one sales. All in all PSN revenue jumped 90 per cent year-on-year.

Destiny players have also clocked five times as many hours online – 125m – than any other title. New PlayStation Plus membership also jumped 115 per cent week-on-week upon Destiny’s release.

The company adds that PS4 enjoyed a market share advantage with Destiny, FIFA 15, Madden NFL 15 and NHL 15.

Things were reasonable for Nintendo, too, with the 3DS version of Smash Bros selling 705k units in just two days, with 135k of those being digital. 3DS sales also climbed 55 per cent month-on-month to 140k units.

As for the overall market, software was down-year-on-year against comparisons with the world-record breaking release of Grand Theft Auto V last year, slumping 36 per cent to $481m. Hardware sales climbed 136 per cent to $433m. The total market was up two per cent at $1.1bn.
