Riccitiello: $99 Wii would explode Nintendos sales

John Riccitiello has come up with a solution to Nintendo’s falling profits: cut the price of the Wii to just $99.

The Electronic Arts CEO believes that such a price point would help the platform holder’s sales explode” at retail, according to Industry Gamers. He also claims this would keep the console competitive against Sony’s PlayStation Move and Microsoft’s Kinect for Xbox 360.

Nintendo’s hardware is still faring reasonably well around the world – enjoying the usual Christmas boost in the UK – but have been in general decline this year.

I would say they did exceptionally well in ’07 and ’08, started tapering in ’09 and ’10, and… I think if they were to price down to $99, they would explode,” said Riccitiello.

They’ve got competition now, in the form of gesture-based gaming from Sony and Microsoft. If they were to find ways to promote third-party content better, as opposed to first-party content, and would hit pricing, I think the platform would see new life.”
