PS4 exceeded even Sony’s own expectations last year, but the platform holder has predicted that the machine will do even better next year.
17.7m PS4s were sold in Sony’s last financial year, ahead of the 17.5m it had forecast. Now the company has said that PS4 will shift a further 20m units in the current financial year ending March 2017. Such an achievement should take the machine past 60m worldwide unit sales.
For comparison, by 2013 PS3 had sold in the region of 80m units after seven years on the market. By March next year PS4 will have been available for less than three and a half years.
Could this predicted increase be due to the possible arrival of a beefed-up PS4 Neo this Q4? And a possible price cut for the current machine? We’ll have the answer to that at E3 in a few short weeks, most likely.
The machine will have recently been helped by the release of smash-hit action title Uncharted 4, sales of which reached 2.7m units in its first week. And while Neo remains purely speculative right now, PlayStation VR is very real and will be with us in time for Christmas.
In January Sony announced that PS4 had reached 35.9m sales.
DFC in February predicted that PS4 will go on to join the 100m+ sellers club. Michael Pachter has forecast total lifetime sales of between 120m-130m units.
