Square Enix and Marvel join forces for new multi-game partnership

Square Enix and Marvel have announced a new multi-game partnership that will kick off with a project surrounding The Avengers.

Both companies announced the partnership on social media this afternoon, releasing a teaser trailer (below) along with the hash-tag #Reassemble. The multi-year, multi-game licensing agreement will see games being developed and published for all sorts of Marvel Super Heroes, with The Avengers being the first to see release.

Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics are both confirmed to be involved in the project, but details about what type of Avengers game they’ll be making, and what consoles it will launch on, are still thin on the ground. Crystal Dynamics will be taking the lead on the project, Square Enix has since confirmed, and will be working in collaboration with Eidos Montreal.

Indeed, Marvel has now said that it won’t be announcing any new details about the game until 2018:

"The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled longtime fans of the franchise," Marvel said in a statement.

"Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come. More details on The Avengers project and other games will be announced in 2018."

By partnering with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos-Montral, we are now working with two of the industry’s most talented and respected game development studios to bring Marvel stories to life in ways our fans have never experienced, said Jay Ong, senior vice president of games and innovation at Marvel Entertainment.

The Avengers project is a perfect example of how Marvel is making games akey part of the landscape for Marvel storytelling, alongside comics, television and film. We can only do this by matching our greatest Super Heroes with the world’s top developers, such as the creative minds at Square Enix.”

Phil Rogers, CEO at Square Enix Americas and Europe added:Marvel’s diverse, innovative universe has created millions of longtime fans, including all of us. It’s exciting to bring together Square Enix’s award-winning development studios with Marvel’s extraordinary storytellers to establish a new entertainment powerhouse. This collaboration of passion and talent will craft epic, imaginative experiences allowing gamers to live out their Super Hero dreams like never before.”

The teaser trailer itself is entirely made of CG footage and cycles between Thor’s rather beaten-up-looking Hammer, Iron Man’s busted arm, and Captain America’s discarded shield, suggesting the team will be facing one of their greatest challenges yet. It also sounds like Black Widow is on narration duty.
