At least 40 out of 100 jobs saved in assets swoop

THQ buys Midway San Diego for $200,000

Another publisher has picked over the bones of Midway: a recent SEC filing has revealed that THQ is buying Midway’s San Diego studio.

The firm is paying just $200,000 for the studio and ‘substantially all’ of its assets. THQ has also made offers of at-will employment to at least 40 of the studio’s 100 staff.

TNA iMPACT is not included in the deal, however – either due to licensing costs or that fact that THQ already owns the successful UFC and WWE fighting game franchises.

For some time the fate of Midway San Diego was uncertain – it, along with the now-closed Midway Newcastle, UK, were some of the assets unwanted by Warner Bros which purchased the bulk of bankrupt games publisher Midway’s assets in June for $49m.

Meanwhile, the SEC filing has shown that other Midway assets in Europe – specifically its UK, France and Germany publishing offices – have been sold off in what amounts to cheap management buyouts for the respective regional bosses.
