The head of Assassin’s Creed publisher Ubisoft is the latest games exec to call for publishers and digital retailers to release their sales data.
CEO Yves Guillemot claims that greater transparency from the downloads market will benefit the overall games industry, which retail stats show to be in decline.
"It gives all the industry better visibility on what’s happening," he told GamesIndustry.
"And not just the industry, but all the supporters of the industry and the financial community as well. So we need to have more information to help the industry continue to grow."
It’s not just talk. Ubisoft announced today that download-only shooter Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon has sold more than 500,000 copies across PC, PSN and XBLA, demonstrating that it is willing to help the industry understand the full impact of digital sales.
Guillemot urged more publishers to follow Ubi’s example, insisting that reluctance and privacy will not necessarily work in their favour.
He said: "When you can, you keep all your secrets. Everybody feels that if the other guys knew where they were getting their money from, competitors would jump on that. Which is true.
"But what we’ve seen is that very often, if you receive as much information as you give, it’s not negative."
UKIE finally launched its UK digital charts last month, but despite support from several major publishers, there are still notable absences such as Call of Duty publisher Activision.
