Ubisoft: Poor Q1 due to empty schedule, franchise releases on the horizon

Ubisoft has reported its quarterly results for the three-month period ending on June 30th, revealing a steep drop in sales ahead of what figures to be a much more bountiful quarter.

The publisher earned $99.5m during the quarter, down 42 per cent from the $171.5m brought in during the same period in 2012.

The cause of the drop was squarely pegged on the complete lack of releases over the stretch – as opposed to last year’s results that were boosted by the launch of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Future Soldier.

Despite the dearth of new titles, the company was still able to beat its quarterly target with the aid of solid digital and back catalog sales during the period.

Sales on previously launched titles were up 56 per cent, and digital numbers were up 27 per cent behind the performances of Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon and Call of Juarez: The Gunslinger.

With the barren period behind it, Ubisoft now turns to the current quarter – where it will almost surely rebound. Sales are projected to be up 35 per cent year-over-year to over $260m, behind the multi-platform launches of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Blacklist and Rayman Legends.
