Ubisoft reveals Rocksmith

While some publishers clearly are no longer convinced about the viability of the guitar game genre, Ubisoft clearly is following the announcement of a brand new music game from the publisher.

Called Rocksmith, the game comes complete with a real electric guitar. In fact, The Hollywood Reporter says that Ubisoft is even in discussions with companies such as Gibson to piece together a $200 SKU with a branded instrument.

Due out in September for Xbox 360 and PS3, Rocksmith will ship with 45 tracks from artists including The Rolling Stones, Nirvana and David Bowie.

Rather than pitching the title as a replacement for Guitar Hero, Ubisoft instead positioning it as a "game with benefits" – the benefit being that it teaches you to play a real instrument.

"Guitar Hero is a party game – Rocksmith is a music experience," Ubisoft’s senior VP of marketing Tony Key stated. "The dream of playing guitar compared to how many follow through – there’s a big gap. We will create a new generation of guitar players."
