It’s been a torrid few weeks for Ubisoft’s internet-dependent PC DRM policy, but despite the turbulence the publisher has pledged to stick with its security measures, claiming that most of its future PC releases will incorporate it.
Ubisoft’s technology requires that PC games constantly authenticate themselves with its servers, meaning even those playing single player games must ensure their PC is net connected at all times.
Not a problem in theory, but in practice it has proved a real headache. Repeated attacks on Ubisoft’s DRM servers has sporadically left gamers unable to play their legitimate PC purchases such as Assassin’s Creed II, Silent Hunter V and, more recently, Settlers 7.
Most forthcoming Ubisoft PC titles will use our online services platform,” a spokesperson for the publisher told Eurogamer. As with any online technology, we are constantly working to evolve and improve it.”
Ubisoft’s upcoming PC releases include Splinter Cell: Conviction, Ghost Recon: Future Soldier, RUSE, Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands and RUSE.
