UK CHARTS: Kane & Lynch debuts at No.1

Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days has shot straight to the top of the ELSPA GfK Chart-Track All formats Top 40 on its first week of release in the UK.

Last week publisher Square Enix told MCV that it expected the game to claim the top spot thanks to the big marketing spend it was putting behind the title. It achieved the feat despite a mixed reception from critics.

It’s a notable improvement of the charts performance of the first game, which could only manage a high of 14th place.

It’s also the third No.1 of the year for Square Enix following the success of Just Cause 2 and Final Fantasy XIII.

Last week’s No.1, Toy Story 3, slips to second place in a Top Ten that remains reasonably static. Just dance manages to climb one place to fifth while there’s a re-entry at number eight for Ubisoft’s Prince of Persia: the Forgotten Sands.

EA’s Madden NFL 11 slips ten places to 20th and there’s a re-entry for Ubisoft’s Peppa Pig: the Game in 31st. Old-time Mario Kart DS also makes a reappearance in 37th.

Here’s the Top Ten in full for the week ending August 21st:
1. Kane & Lynch 2: Dog Days
2. Toy Story 3
3. Red Dead Redemption
4. LEGO Harry Potter: Years 1-4
5. Just Dance
6. Art Academy
7. Super Mario Galaxy 2
8. Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands
9. Dance on Broadway
10. Battlefield: Bad Company 2
