Epic Games VP clarifies 'Android UDK' rumours

Unreal Engine 3 game comes to Android [Update 1]

Florida-based studio Trendy Entertainment has ported its Dungeon Defenders game – which was built with UE3 – to Android devices just days after its iOS release.

The game is “the first to bring the Unreal Engine technology, which powers the best-selling Infinity Blade, to the Android platform”, according to the Florida studio.

Trendy is an Unreal Engine 3 licensee, Epic Games told Develop today, meaning allowing it to build games on a variety of platforms including PC, Xbox 360, PS3, iOS and Android.

“Android code has been available for months and Trendy Entertainment, one of our UE3 licensees, is in fact shipping a game with it any day now,” Epic Games vice president Mark Rein said.

Rein’s comments follow a Develop report regarding rumours that the Unreal Development Kit could soon include Android support. Develop has corrected the article after making contact with Mark Rein, who has suggested UDK will not be coming to Android any time soon.

Trendy’s Dungeon Defenders can be played on Android hardware with at least 512MB of RAM, an 800MHz or better SOC with support for OpenGL ES 2.0, and at least 400MB of free storage.

Epic Games has already made public demonstrations of Unreal Engine 3 running on Android, at trade shows such as E3 and Develop.

Rein, who has previously spoken of possible difficulties developing on Android, said his firm is nevertheless happy to supply Unreal Engine 3 code for the platform.

Last week the company released the Unreal development Kit for iOS devices – a binary-only version of Unreal Engine that is free to download and tinker with. Epic will take 25 per cent of revenues after $5,000 for commercial releases.

Trendy’s Dungeon Defenders can be played on Android hardware with at least 512MB of RAM, an 800MHz or better SOC with support for OpenGL ES 2.0, and at least 400MB of free storage.
