The USA is home to 1,641 game development studios and publishers, figures from a new report by the Entertainment Software Association show.
According to the research, these companies operate 1,871 separate video game facilities across the country.
California is home to by far the most game companies in the USA, with 546 setting up shop in the state. 196 companies are based in Texas, 154 in New York, 149 in Washington and 92 in Massachusetts.
406 colleges and universities across 46 states also offer graduate and undergraduate degrees and professional certificates in game design and development. This represents an increase from 390 last year.
California offers the most games-related courses, with 66 schools providing video game-related programmes. A study by the Higher Education Video Game Alliance claims that 93 per cent of alumni have gained employment within a year after graduating, earning around $76,200 on average a year.
