Valkyria Revolution release date confirmed for Q2 2017

Valkyria Revolution, the follow-up to Sega’s 2008 PS3 game Valkyria Chronicles, will be launching on PS4, Xbox One and the PS Vita in Q2 2017 in Europe and the US. The game will be launching both physically and digitally on PS4 and Xbox One, while the PS Vita version will be digital only.

Previously known as Valkyria: Azure Revolution, the latest instalment in Sega’s tactical RPG series eschews the traditional turn-based combat found in Valkyria Chronicles and introduces a new kind of system that mixes real-time combat with tactical strategy.

The game is also set in an alternate time, continent and universe to Valkyria Chronicles and focuses more on individual player decisions as they manoeuvre the five central characters through their war-torn homeland. Players might be remembered as epic war heroes or treacherous oppressors as they exact their revenge on their imperialist oppressors.

Valkyria Revolution was originally announced for PS4 in November 2015. At the same time, Sega announced a PS4 remaster of Valkyria Chronicles.

Despite strong critical acclaim, sales for Valkyria Chronicles fell short of expectations when it first launched in Japan in April 2008. The PS3 original sold 77,000 copies in its first week in Japan, and just 33,000 units in the US during its opening month when it launched seven months later in November.

Sales picked up once the game received a price cut in April 2009, and the 2014 PC launch strengthened sales further. According to data from Steam Spy, the PC release of Valkyria Chronicles has sold over 872,000 units on Steam as of December 2016.
