We could be seeing EA games on Nintendo’s NX

EA is looking into ‘any and all opportunities’ to develop software for Nintendo’s upcoming new hardware, the NX.

That’s according to the publisher’s CEO Andrew Wilson, who was asked during a recent investor call whether EA plans on supporting NX.

This comes after EA has all but abandoned Nintendo’s Wii U platform, which launched in 2012.

In May 2013, the firm boasted a ‘strong partnership with Nintendo’, despite some of its games not arriving on the platform. Later it was revealed that no EA titles were in development for Wii U.

Then at the start of 2014, a source speaking with CVG said that ‘Nintendo was dead to EA very quickly’ shortly after the Wii U’s release.

But going forwards, things could well be different.

"As we look to the future, we see a world where more people are playing on more platforms in more geographies than ever before," Wilson said.

We see the platform cycle now not just as a traditional six-year console cycle, but as kind of a six-month refresh rate on mobile devices, smart TVs, Internet-enabled refrigerators, or whatever it might be.

"And what we’re doing in terms of resource allocation is really investing at a core digital platform level, at an engine level, and at a game architecture level to ensure that we are able to deliver amazing experiences, six inches to 60 inches and beyond, two minutes to two-hour session times and beyond, across any and all relevant devices where gamers are playing.

As it relates to Nintendo, we’ve had a tremendous relationship with them over the years. And we will evaluate any and all opportunities with them in the same way we do all platform opportunities."

Nintendo recently started distributing NX development kits. A report in the Wall Street Journal suggests the console could be hitting stores in 2016.
