Amazon reveals Fire TV streaming set-top box

Amazon has revealed its long-rumoured ‘console’ – the video streaming FireTV.

The gadget boasts a quad-core processor and 2GB of RAM and is powered by Android. It will feature video content from Amazon’s own Instant Video service, as well as YouTube and Netflix among others.

As predicted by MCV, streaming TV and movies is a large part of the FireTV’s appeal, but gaming plays a prominant role, too.

Not only are ‘thousands’ of titles going to be available from companies including Ubisoft, EA, Mojang and Disney, but Amazon Game Studio is developing games for the platform. At the reveal, a sci-fi shooter called Sev Zero was shown off, while a new dinosaur adventure game was teased.

Over 1,000 titles on the market will be free-to-play, while the average cost of a paid game will be $1.85.

The gadget also has its own dedicated Fire game controller, which will cost $39.99. The controller comes free with a copy of Sev Zero.

The Amazon FireTV itself will set consumers back $99.
