Dirt Rally coming to PSVR as paid DLC and new physical edition at retail

Dirt Rally is coming to PlayStation VR in just a few short weeks, Codemasters announced today. The update will be available as a standalone DLC Add-on for existing Dirt Rally owners priced at 9.99 on the PlayStation Store, but a physical retail version of the game that includes the VR upgrade will also be available. This will be titled ‘Dirt Rally Plus VR Upgrade’.

In addition to giving players the ability to drive in virtual reality, the upgrade will also add a brand-new Co-Driver Mode to the game’s rally sections. This will allow a second player to get in on the action by using the PS4 Dualshock controller to provide pace notes calls to the driver from the game’s social screen.

"The PlayStation VR upgrade allows you to get closer than ever to the experience of being a real-life rally driver," chief games designer Paul Coleman said in a statement.

"The addition of the co-driver mode also allows you to work together with a friend to get through the stage and adds an even deeper level of realism and immersion to the rally stages."

Dirt Rally was originally released for PC back in December 2015 after an extensive Early Access period on Steam that started in April of the same year. It then received physical PS4 and Xbox One editions in April 2016. Support for Oculus Rift then followed in July, but this was made available as a free update rather than a paid piece of DLC.

Developed and published by Codemasters, the game received rave reviews from critics, but its physical release failed to make the GfK Entertainment’s Top 50 best-selling games of 2016 list. Indeed, the only racing game to make it into the Top 50 (excluding Rocket League) was F1 2016, which charted in 41st place.

To celebrate the upcoming launch of its PSVR support, Codemasters has released a new trailer for the game, which you can view below:
