GAME: PS4 and Xbox One install base surpasses 5.1m in the UK

5.1 million PlayStation 4 and Xbox Ones have been sold in the UK.

That’s according to High Street retailer GAME, which reported the figure in a presentation for its financials (as spotted by Videogamer).

The firm cites GfK, IHS and IDG for these figures, which represent the install base of the current generation consoles up until January 23rd 2016. This is up 45 per cent on the 3.5m units the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 had sold at the same point in their lifecycle.

However, based on figures MCV has seen, the number GAME is reporting may well not be up-weighted, and therefore the UK install base of the PS4 and Xbox One could be as high as 5.4 million.

The tracker for this space, GFK Entertainment, covers 95 per cent of the UK games market. Therefore, to get an accurate and whole picture of the sector, one needs to upweight the raw sales data (by dividing by 0.95, seeing as you asked).

In addition, earlier in the month MCV revealed that the PlayStation 4 had sold three million units in the UK. Taking into account the figures revealed today, the Xbox One has sold up to 2.4 million units.

In its report, GAME says that the adoption rate of PS4 and Xbox One is well ahead of the previous generation – PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 – at the same point in its lifecycle.
