New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe debuts at top of the charts

UPDATE: GfK’s initial report was "missing a significant number of sales, across multiple retailers," therefore the following story (originally published on January 14th) was updated with the correct information on January 15th.

The Switch just got its first No.1 of 2019, with New Super Mario Bros U Deluxe making it to the top spot of the charts this week. Week One sales for the title were up 55.9 per cent compared to launch sales for the 2012 original Wii U title. However, it should be noted that New Super Mario Bros U was a launch title for the Wii U so the install base was obviously much lower than the Switch’s current install base.

Meanwhile, FIFA 19 still made it to No.2 despite a 53 per cent drop in sales week-on-week, much like Red Dead Redemption 2 still managed to reach the third spot in spite of a similar 53 per cent decrease in sales.

Tales of Vesperia: Definitive Edition made it to the Top Ten, debuting at No.9. Sales were up 40.7 per cent compared to launch sales of the original 2009 title, though it only launched on one platform (Xbox 360) back then, against three platforms this time around (PS4, XO, Switch).

There were no other new entries in the Top 40 this week, but there was one re-entry, Minecraft for Switch, which came back straight at No.33 following a 156 per cent boost in sales week-on-week.

Here’s the Top Ten for the week ending January 12th (data courtesy of GfK/Ukie):
