Nvidia today announced that its PhysX and APEX technologies will be supported on the PS4, which Sony announced in February.
Nvidia and AMD’s war for dominance of the PC platform has been as fiercely fought and well documented as Sony and Microsoft’s in the console space, so it’s interesting to see Nvidia come out and support a console, the core APU architecture of which is developed by AMD.
In games, PhysX and APEX are used for more realistic object physics, collision detection, ragdoll effects, and fluid, smoke and clothing simulation.
Unlike the PS3, which featured proprietary hardware, the PS4 is more akin to a PC in its build-up, an approach that has been welcomed by game developers.
Several PC games have offered optional PhysX settings to players, and enabling them delivers more fluid physics, improved particle effects and more atmospheric environments. Most recently, games such as Borderlands 2 and Batman: Arkham City have offered PhysX support on PC.
Great physics technology is essential for delivering a better gaming experience and multiplatform support is critical for developers. With PhysX and APEX support for PlayStation4, customers can look forward to better games,” said Mike Skolones, product manager for PhysX at Nvidia.
