Nvidia to bring Kepler to mobile; promises 3x better performance than iPad 4

Project Logan, Nvidia’s next-generation mobile GPU, will feature Kepler architecture, which the company says can outperform the PS3 and Xbox 360, with 3x better performance than the iPad 4.

Through Kepler, mobile devices can now take advantage of graphics technologies such as OpenGL 4.4, OpenGL ES 3.0 and DirectX 11, with support for CUDA 5 and OpenCL.

Nvidia claims that with Project Kepler, devices can deliver the same level of rendering as the iPad 4 by utilising only one-third of the power.

More than ever before, we see the opportunity for developers to create high-end games and ship them across multiple platforms on a wide variety of devices, including tablet, smartphone, Windows, Mac, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Nvidia’s OpenGL 4.3 achievements open up the mobile front of this strategy,” Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney said in a blog post.

This isn’t your father’s GPU: Nvidia’s mobile graphics technology is built on the same Kepler graphics architecture found in its latest generation of PC GPUs. It’s the same Kepler architecture on top of which we’ve created high-end Unreal Engine 4 PC demos,” Sweeney added.

Nvidia hasn’t yet announced when the new GPU will be ready to hit the market, but with Tegra 4 only arriving now, it could be a while.
