PS4 worldwide release this year: Gamestop

The PlayStation 4 will be introduced globally in 2013, retailer Gamestop’s executive vice president of strategy business and brand development Michael Hogan has said, allaying fears that the console would arrive in India, along with Europe, in next year.

We know that Sony will introduce the PlayStation 4 globally in 2013, but we are still waiting to see what Microsoft’s final plans are,” Hogan said, speaking at a conference call with financial analysts.

Sony has a history of staggered launches for its PlayStation consoles. Historically, consoles arrived in Japan and North America first, with European, and by extension Indian, launch delayed by a few months.

Sony has announced that the PS4 will arrive this year, but hasn’t officially clarified whether a 2013 release applies to all territories. Hogan’s statement is the most significant indicator yet that the PS4 will also arrive in India this year.

The console maker is reportedly set to begin PS4 production in August, with 16 million units planned to be shipped this year.

Even a single launch in 2013 will drive double-digit console growth in 2014; and two launches would likely drive the console category north of 20% growth,” Hogan predicted.

CFO Robert Loyd gave a positive outlook for the latter half of the year. With Grand Theft Auto V and Battlefield 4 releasing in the third quarter, and the PlayStation 4 launching in the fourth quarter, we expect a return to growth for the back half of the year.”
