Rock Band downloads hit 75m

Looking at Rock band’s boxed retail sales really is only half the story – Harmonix owner MTV has confirmed that over 75m purchases have been made through the game’s in-game digital portal.

Each download on Xbox Live costs between 80 Microsoft Points (around 69p) and 240 MSP (2.06), with a selection of free tracks. Most, however, cost 160 MSP (1.37).

Taking that average, the numbers represent a total value of around 103.5m in revenue – a sum that easily makes the series one of the most profitable in the sector.

Rock Band’s digital catalogue now numbers around 2000 tracks from over 800 artists.

The success of our song downloads has afforded us the opportunity to approach Rock Band as an interactive music platform and reshape the way gamers think of expansion content,” MTV Networks’ SVP of games, music and programming for Paul DeGooyer stated.

Our commitment to weekly releases, disc export, forward compatibility of downloads and the launch of the Rock Band Network were milestones in the development of Rock Band’s vibrant digital business.

Now, with the release of our 2,000th song, we are reaffirming our commitment to present new music every week – and with the new features in Rock Band 3, there will be more ways than ever to experience it.”

Rock Band 3 is due out in the UK on October 29th.
