Rocket League surpasses 25m players

Rocket League has surpassed more than 25m players, developer Psyonix has announced. The news comes just days after Sony named it as the best-selling game on the PlayStation Store in 2016.

According to Psyonix, over 1bn games have been played since the game launched in July 2015. Of those 1bn games, 50 per cent of them have been competitive matches. 33 per cent have been casual games, while alternative modes such as Rumble, Hoops and Snow Day made up 11 per cent of games. Just 6 per cent were private matches.

All this equates to 22,129,610,059 minutes of gameplay – a figure better appreciated as 42,103 years, 4,210 decades or 421 centuries.

Rumble mode is one of the newest features to be added to Psyonix’s vehicular football game, and Psyonix reports that over 31m matches have already been played since it was introduced at September last year.

As well as being the best-selling PlayStation Store game of last year in both Europe and the US, where it beat the likes of Battlefield 1 and FIFA 17 to claim the number one spot, Rocket League was also one of the Platinum sellers in Steam’s best-selling games list for 2016. Here, it joined the likes of The Witcher III: Wild Hunt, Civilization VI, Counter Strike: Global Offensive, No Man’s Sky and XCOM 2 to rank as one of Steam’s top twelve PC games of last year.

Psyonix doesn’t plan to stop there, either, as it said there will be more news and updates to come about the game throughout the coming year.
