Rockstar denies Social Club hack claims

Grand Theft Auto V creator Rockstar has said that its Social Club service has not suffered a hack.

For the past few days the developer has been inundated with complaints from gamers whose Rockstar Social Club accounts have been hijacked by others, locking them out of their account and in some instances preventing access to games.

However, Rockstar says that those who have fallen victim have instead had account names and passwords that they’ve used across multiple services stolen from elsewhere.

As confirmed yesterday, the Rockstar Games Social Club has not been compromised,” the company told Kotaku. However, it appears that attempts have been made to access user accounts using email and password combinations from an unaffiliated, compromised website or database elsewhere on the internet.

For the accounts affected, we are in the process of reverting those accounts back to their original owners. As a reminder, it is a good policy to ensure that the Rockstar Games Social Club account username and password is not shared across multiple websites on the internet.”
