Silent Hunter locks torpedoes on free-to-play

Ubisoft is to release a new free-to-play online instalment in its Silent Hunter series.

Called Silent Hunter Online, the game can be played in a browser. It is being developed by Settlers and Anno developer Blue Byte. It will run using Adobe Flash player 11 and will be fully 3D.

It will star a number of submarines, all of which are historically accurate. The main mode, Battle of the Atlantic, will run on an asynchronous basis with campaign outcomes affecting the game worlds of other players.

The entire campaign will also be playable in co-op – a first for the series.

This is the most innovative Silent Hunter experience ever created and we can’t wait to let our fans dive into the game,” Blue Byte’s head of production Christopher Schmitz stated.

The Silent Hunter franchise has sold nearly 2m worldwide since its introduction on 1996.
