Smedley: People that don’t play games have no business in industry

Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley doesn’t believe people should be working in the games industry if they don’t play games.

In my opinion, people that don’t play games have no business in this business. It should be the gamers-only club, I think. I can’t stand people that don’t know what they’re talking about when it comes to playing these things,” Smedley told Edge.

As you’d expect, Smedley himself is a core gamer who sinks his hours into Eve Online along with Dota 2 and Planetside 2 more recently.

I really play. I’m in a Null-sec corp, the whole bit. The games I’m playing right now are Planetside 2, Dota 2 and Eve. Eve used to be the forefront game, but now it’s the background game because I don’t have a choice, I’m having too much fun in Planetside 2. And Dota 2 I’m playing a lot with my kids right now,” he said.

The notion to boot non-gamers out of the industry is a logical one to this writer, especially when you take a moment and remember back to all those awkward expo press events throughout the years with executives and marketing heads pretending to know much more than they actually did about their respective product.

How can you be passionate if you’re not even knowledgeable?
