SNES Mini is in the pipeline, report claims

The recently discontinued NES Mini will be followed by the release of a SNES Mini.

That’s according to Eurogamer, which has word from a source close to Nintendo that a miniature version of the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is planned for release this Christmas.

The planned SNES is also one of the major reasons, the site adds, that the NES Mini was recently scrapped. Despite demand for the console far outstripping supply, the resources that would be needed to continue manufacturing the device will instead be allocated to the new hardware.

As for the potential software line-up for the SNES Mini, it’s fair to say that Nintendo has a bounty of riches to pluck from, especially if third party publishers are on board.

Top picks for the line-up would surely include Super Mario World, Super Mario Kart, perhaps Super Mario All Stars, Starfox, Donkey Kong Country, Street Fighter II, Zelda: A Link to the Past, F-Zero, Chrono Trigger, Pilotwings, Secret of Mana, NBA Jam, Super Metroid, Super Mario RPG and Super Ghouls ‘n Ghosts.

Oh, and if we’re really lucky, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time. And maybe Stunt Race FX.

It was with surprise that Nintendo yesterday announced that it has ended production of the popular NES Classic.

Throughout April, NOA territories will receive the last shipments of Nintendo Entertainment System: NES Classic Edition systems for this year,” the platform holder said. We encourage anyone interested in obtaining this system to check with retail outlets regarding availability.

We understand that it has been difficult for many consumers to find a system, and for that we apologize. We have paid close attention to consumer feedback, and we greatly appreciate the incredible level of consumer interest and support for this product.”

It elaborated on the decision toIGN, adding: NES Classic Edition wasn’t intended to be an ongoing, long-term product. However, due to high demand, we did add extra shipments to our original plans.”

The machine’s cancellation in Europe has also since been confirmed.
