Sony is trying to trademark the term ‘Let’s Play’

PlayStation platform holder Sony has risked aggravating the sizable YouTube community by applying to trademark one of its most popular terms.

‘Let’s Play’ is a term widely used by many makers for gameplay videos. However, Sony in October filed a trademark application with the United States Patent and Trademark Office for exactly that term.

Destructoid reports that the application describes the term as referring to "electronic transmission and streaming of video games via global and local computer networks; streaming of audio, visual, and audiovisual material via global and local computer networks".

Seeing as the term is widely popularised you’d expect Sony to run into problems with the application, and indeed it has. The Trademark Office has subsequently refused the application over concerns it may be confused with an existing trademark ‘LP Let’z Play’.

Sony has a six months grace period to argue its case and clarify its intended use, should it choose to.
