Square Enix announces first E3 presentation in three years

Square Enix hasn’t hosted an E3 press conference since 2015, the year Final Fantasy VII Remake was announced. A one-off live show that may be the last time we see the publisher walk the boards at the event. Instead, this year we’ll be treated to a pre-recorded video showcase, similar to a Nintendo direct, that will be broadcast in English and Japanese around the world at 6pm UK, Monday June 11th.

The announcement was made on Twitter and more details (though not many more) can be found on the Square Enix E3 website. Tantalisingly, the website’s FAQ includes “What titles will be announced or showcased in Square Enix E3 Showcase 2018?”, but succumbing to this blatant clickbait results in the trollish answer. “Find out here on June 11!”

Square Enix’s last press conference in 2015 came with a large number of reveals, including footage from Final Fantasy VII Remake, Nier: Automata’s first announcement, World of Final Fantasy gameplay, trailers for Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Rise of the Tomb Raider, plus the first look at studio Tokyo RPG Factory’s first game, I Am Setsuna. It’s likely we can expect a similar level of reveals for the publisher’s show this year, even if it’s not performed live.

Expectations are high for first footage of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, an update on Final Fantasy VII Remake, more Kingdom Hearts 3 gameplay and, hopefully, a first look at the Avengers project(s) in development at Eidos Montreal and Crystal Dynamics. Plus whatever new announcements the company has up its sleeves. Should be well worth a watch.
