Switch best-selling US console in April, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe hits 550k sales

Nintendo has announced it sold over 280,000 Switch units in the US last month, making it the best-selling piece of hardware in April according to new figures from NPD. This is the second month in a row that the Switch has topped NPD’s US hardware charts.

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was also the top-selling game of the month, shifting more than 460,000 units, or 550,000 units if you include the title’s digital sales, according to Nintendo’s internal sales figures – an impressive feat when you consider the game only launched on April 28th in the US and NPD closed its reporting period on April 29th.

Add that to the366,542 units sold so far in Japan (according to the latest figures from Famitsu), and we now know Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has already sold at least 916,500 units worldwide. Throw Europe into the mix and it can’t be long before it hits one million.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, meanwhile, was the third best-selling game in April, but Nintendo didn’t release any specific sales figures for the month, or how many it’s sold in total since launching on March 3rd. Elsewhere, Nintendo reports that 1-2-Switch and Snipperclips also "saw strong sales" in April, but again didn’t provide any exact numbers.

"Nintendo will look to continue this momentum into the summer with a series of great new games for Nintendo Switch and Nintendo 3DS," it said in a statement, pointing toward the upcoming releases of ARMS on June 16th and Splatoon 2 on July 21st for Switch and Ever Oasis on June 23rd and Hey! Pikmin on July 28th for Nintendo 3DS.
