There’s now a Commodore smartphone

Legendary video game brand Commodore is making a come back, sort of, as an Android smartphone.

As reported by Wired, the phone is being produced by two Italian entrepreneurs, Massimo Canigiani and Carlo Scattolini and is called the PET, after one of Commodore’s iconic computers.

It runs Android and includes two emulators allowing gamers to play both Commodore 64 and Amiga games.

Not that the iconic Commodore company exists anymore. The hardware firm was one of the hottest names in video games back in the 1980s with its Commodore 64 computer. It shifted 17m units, and Guinness deemed it the best-selling computer ever.

Commodore went bankrupt in 1994, with the brand name changing hands several times in the period after. Until March, it seemed the name was owned by a Dutch company called Commodore Holdings BV.

Then in March, Canigiani and Scattolini registered the Commodore Business Machines Ltd name in the UK, saying they had acquired the rights for the brand and trademark in 38 regions.
