Uhrman on Amazon’s Fire TV: Games are not an ‘added bonus’ for Ouya

While the effect of Amazon’s new Fire TV on the general gaming market is still to be determined, the device appears to be in direct competition with similarly priced microconsoles. Ouya, for its part, doesn’t appear to be worried about the prospect.

Speaking with Games Industry, company CEO Julia Uhrman explained that Ouya has always been dedicated to an ideal gaming experience – rather than a device offering games as an extra perk.

"Just as Amazon blazed a trail for a new way of selling online, Ouya invented a new way to think about console games. But for us, games are not simply an ‘added bonus’ – they’re the whole point,” Uhrman said.

Ouya is solely dedicated to the devs creating games, and the players who play them. Their ideal experience is all we think about. We have more than 700 titles – many award winning—from over 34,000 registered developers on the platform.”

In contrast, a pair of notable analysts have released statements that indicate potential troublesome times ahead for Ouya and other microconsoles:

"The only one who should be worried is Ouya, since it is essentially the same device from a games perspective, but it does more because it accesses movie streaming," Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter said.

"This announcement will have smaller Android console players looking over their shoulders,” IHS’ Piers Harding-Rolls also stated.
