UK lifetime console sales revealed

As part of its full year financial results posting earlier today, retailer GAME has dished out the numbers on UK lifetime sales of all today’s gaming platforms.

It’s the DS that leads the pack, unsurprisingly, with total lifetime sales of 8.8m units. Next in line is its home console cousin the Wii, which has sold 4.9m machines since its release in December 2006.

Xbox 360 has to date shifted 3.2m units, the same amount as Sony’s PSP. PS3, meanwhile, has now sold 1.9m units in just over two years on the shelves.

Today’s current-gen consoles have sold a total of 32m units in the UK in total – meaning that, in theory, half of the UK population now owns a games console, though of course many gamers will own more than one system.

None of today’s consoles have yet matched PS2’s UK achievements, however. UK sales of Sony’s still-popular console have now hit 10m.

In mainland Europe the total console install base now stands at 42.7m, with PS3 actually ahead of Xbox 360 by 300,000 units.
