US: Xbox enjoys best ever month

Sales of Xbox 360 hardware were up an amazing 42 per cent year-on-year in the US in December, paving the way the console’s most successful ever month in the territory.

In total it sold 1.86m units – significantly less than the 2.5m analyst Michael Pachter had predicted but still an impressive figure, especially considering Microsoft’s claims of stock shortages.

Xbox 360 was the only machine to increase sales year-on-year.

The LA Times reckons that Wii console sales reached 2.36m units, which would be a decrease of 38 per cent, and that PS3 sold 1.2m machines – an 11 per cent annual downturn.

The DS was the real champ, though. Total sales of the handheld hit 2.5m units throughout the month.

Though 24 per cent down year-on-year, it still brings total 2010 sales to 8.5m machines and lifetimes US sales to 47m units – officially beating former record holder PS2.
