Video games have a ‘big role’ for new Blockbuster

Video games will play a major role in the future of Blockbuster UK, the retailer has told MCV.

The rental firm was rescued by Gordon Brothers Europe last week. There are 264 remaining Blockbuster outlets with 2,000 employees.

The firm aims to improve Blockbuster’s profitability with new products, technologies and ‘better basic retailing’.

Former HMV commercial boss Gary Warren will head up the new Blockbuster. Warren was responsible for HMV’s ecommerce offering, which is sure to be a key area of focus for Blockbuster UK.

The buyout is certainly good news for the trade.

Games retail has been hard hit of late, by some of the most difficult trading conditions we’ve seen,” PlayStation’s UK commercial director Alex Coultate told MCV.

It’s great news that a long-standing and well respected retailer will live on.”
