Virgin Media partners with Square Enix to bring ‘in-game perks’ for its customers playing Marvel Avengers next year

Virgin Media has announced its partnering with Square Enix to bring Virgin Media customers “exclusive in-game items” when Marvel’s Avengers launches in May 2020. Virgin Media is also sponsoring the game’s first UK hands-on event at EGX later this year.

Throughout the campaign, Virgin Media says its customers will also be eligible” to participate in incredible competitions and merchandise giveaways in addition to receiving limited-time in-game items at launch”.

“We want to deliver amazing experiences for our customers and, with our out-of-this-world Marvel’s Avengers partnership, we’re assembling an incredible line up of exclusives for Virgin Media customers,” said Cilesta Van Doorn, director of brand and marketing at Virgin Media. “From in-game perks to amazing competitions and giveaways, gamers will be able to take their online play to new heights.

“Avengers is one of the most revered and successful entertainment franchises in the world, so giving our customers a host of incredible experiences linked to one of the most anticipated games makes this a powerful alliance. We are planning to blow the minds of our customers with this partnership so stay tuned for future announcements.”

“It’s a true passion project for us to work with these amazing heroes and awesome partners on a definitive Avengers gaming experience,” added Scot Amos, Head of Studio at Crystal Dynamics. “All of us involved are huge fans of these Super Heroes and with over 80 years of lore, we get to tap into fantastic source material as inspiration for our original story in Marvel’s Avengers.”

In a similar deal, Microsoft recently revealed it has partnered with Vodafone to provide its customers with the opportunity to participate in the official Project xCloud public preview in order to “better understand how the technology will work on mobile networks, and to understand how 5G and 4G networks can best support gamers”.

Calling the new venture a “technical partnership to optimise the technology for gamers in the UK”, Microsoft said Project xCloud will enable “true ‘gaming on the go’ so players can enjoy some of their favourite Xbox console games on their smartphone or tablet”. Vodafone – the first UK network to collaborate with Microsoft in “these ground-breaking trials” – states its 5G network, which it reports is available in more places than any other network, is “perfect for game streaming and will allow players to have the ultimate gaming experience on the go”.
