Wii surpasses 50 million global sales

Nintendo boss Satoru Iwata has announced that Wii has surpassed 50 million worldwide sales.

Iwata revealed the news at this afternoon’s keynote at GDC in San Francisco.

The Wii has reached the figure quicker in its lifecycle quicker than Sony’s PS2 – making it the fastest-selling platform of all time.

Iwata’s keynote speech was entitled "Discovering New Development Opportunities".

He also revealed that the latest iteration of the DS console, the DSi, has now sold more than 2 million units since it launched in Japan in November 2008.
