3D off the cards for Wii 2

Despite its heavy investment in 3D for its latest piece of hardware, the 3DS, Nintendo has suggested that its next home console is unlikely to follow the same path.

"Glasses-free is a big deal," NoA boss Reggie Fils-Aime told CNN.

"We’ve not said publicly what the next thing for us will be in the home console space, but based on what we’ve learned on 3D, likely, that won’t be it."

Part of the reason is Nintendo’s continued resistance to any 3D tech that requires the user to wear glasses, as was explained by Nintendo’s director and producer Hideki Konno.

"I think at Nintendo, we realise that any sort of goggle-type 3D technology was not going to work," Konno stated. "In order to make 3D technology viable with video games, we thought we needed to have glasses-free 3D."
