A Gears of War movie is being made at Universal

A Gears of War movie is in the works at Universal and has the people who helped make Ted and Rise of the Planet of the Apes on board.

The movie was initially announced during the Gears of War launch celebration live stream last night, but few details were given. However the folks over at Variety managed to dig up a bit more information, confirming that it is being made at Universal Pictures with producers Scott Stuber, who worked on Ted and The Kingdom, and Dylan Clark who worked on Rise of the Planet of the Apes, teaming up on the project.

There is no news on whether this will be a direct rip of the story from the games or if it will be a totally new experience, however Gears of War co-creator Rod Fergusson hinted at the latter.

I think you have to let the movies be the movies,” Fergusson said when speaking to Variety. They’re two different mediums, and two different audiences in some cases, and I think some video game movies in the past have failed because they tried to make a movie for gamers. If you have this great IP with a deep backstory and lots of lore that you can make interesting stories out of it’s great, but if you just go after the gaming audience then it isn’t going to be a successful movie.”
