Activision thinks Bungie deal may outlive boxed games

Boxed retail may not survive beyond 2019 and perhaps end as early as 2013, Activision believes.

That’s the latest revelation to emerge from court documents detailing the publishing agreement between Bungie and Activision.

As revealed earlier today, the pair currently have a deal spanning four title the ‘Destiny’ series, with tentative release dates of 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019. These will be supplemented by four titles released under the ‘Comet’ series in 2014, 2016, 2018 and 2020.

Both titles will be supported by subscriptions, DLC and micro-transactions, pointing to a break from the typical console triple-A release model.

Activision expects” these games to be released as a blend of retail packaged goods” and digital, though adds that the future retail model for iterations of the Destiny Games may be via digital download rather than disc or packaged goods”.

Furthermore, while the pricing strategy for the products shall be subject to mutual approval” between Activision and Bungie, Activision retains the power of the tie-breaking vote” should the pair fail to reach agreement.

Furthermore, Activision will have control and final approval of all decisions relating to retail sales and promotions, discounts and rebates” though Activision has agreed to meaningfully consult with [Bungie] on such decisions in advance”.
