Amazon clamps down on SNES Mini bulk buyers

People hoping to make financial gain from the expected scarcity of Nintendo’s upcoming SNES Mini have been dealt a blow.

As posted on Neogaf, customers who placed bulk orders for the upcoming retro console on Amazon have been told that their orders have been trimmed back down to just one unit.

We’re writing to you about your Amazon.co.uk order… which includes more than one Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System,” the email reads.

Unfortunately, there’s been a change to the availability of this item on Amazon.co.uk… As such, we have reduced the quantity of the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System in your order to one (1) unit. We understand this isn’t what you expected when you placed your order and apologise for the inconvenience.”

Whether this means that Nintendo has reduced the amount of stock being offered to retailers or that simply Nintendo and/or Amazon wants to deter scalping (the practise of buying hard to find items to re-sell for more than RRP) is not known. Certainly lots of folk are already listing their pre-ordered SNES Mini units of eBay for big mark-ups.

The unit is no longer available to pre-order on GAME.co.uk, but can be pre-ordered in store, albeit with an elevated deposit of 50 – a move that GAME openly says deters scalpers”.

Nintendo last week saidthat the stock situation will be better this time than it was with the hard to find NES Classic Mini.

We aren’t providing specific numbers, but we will produce significantly more units of Super NES Classic Edition than we did of NES Classic Edition,” it claimed.

Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition is currently planned to ship from Sept. 29 until the end of calendar year 2017. At this time, we have nothing to announce regarding any possible shipments beyond this year.

Our long-term efforts are focused on delivering great games for the Nintendo Switch system and continuing to build momentum for that platform, as well as serving the more than 63m owners of Nintendo 3DS family systems. We are offering Super Nintendo Entertainment System: Super NES Classic Edition in special recognition of the fans who show tremendous interest our classic content.”
