Not shy of reinvention, Atari is taking one of its classic arcade IPs and doing something different. Very different.

Asteroids shot to fame when it hit arcades in 1979 as a 2D vector arcade shooter. Asteroids: Outpost, however, is looking to capitalise on the recent trend for survival games set out by the likes of Minecraft, DayZ and Rust.

It's described as a re-imagining” of the original game that is set in an open world, offering a sandbox survival experience where players must construct and defend a space base. Resources must be collected, ore scavenged and equipment crafted. There will also be a multiplayer element.

Asteroids is one of the most iconic titles in Atari's portfolio of more than 200 games and franchises, and we're looking forward to ushering the game into today's digital gaming era,” Atari CEO Fred Chesnais said.

We're paying homage to the original Asteroids by incorporating classic features such as asteroid blasting capabilities, while introducing a completely new premise and gameplay. Asteroids: Outpost will appeal to both fans of the classic Asteroids as well as enthusiasts of immersive survival games and expansive MMOs.”
