Former Microsoft executive Robbie Bach has said that mistakes made by the Sony management in the transition between PS2 and PS3 played a big part in the tremendous success of Xbox 360.
Some of the success of Xbox was due to the fact that Sony did some really not so smart things,” he told an audience at the Northwest Entrepreneur Network event in Seattle, as reported by GeekWire.
They mismanaged their 70 per cent market share. It’s a long conversation. The transition to PlayStation 3 was really, really bad. And really hard.
They mismanaged their partners, they mismanaged their cost structure. They made their next platform so complicated that developers couldn’t develop for it.”
By contrast, Bach named Apple as an example of a competitor who rarely makes mistakes and is tough to match.
They have made very, very few mistakes over the last 10 years,” he added. It’s remarkable, actually. I give them a lot of credit.
I don’t always agree with everything they do, but they’ve made remarkably few mistakes. If you’re in a startup and your competition doesn’t make mistakes, the world is a hard place, and it doesn’t matter how much money you have.”
