Street Fighter producer Yoshinori Ono says that Capcom won't greenlight sequels to games that sell under 2m copies.

In an interview with Famitsu (via Eventhubs) Ono was asked about the possibility of a sequel to Street Fighter X Tekken. Having downplayed the possibility, the mag pointed out that the Capcom vs SNK series didn't achieve major success until the release of the sequel – for which investment in both the first and second games was of course a prerequisite.

That's what I've always been telling the company too,” Ono replied. But at the end of the day, there are just some brick walls that a salaryman can never overcome.

For instance, if a game doesn't sell over 2m copies, then we'd have to put the brakes on any plans for a sequel. All that means is that we weren't capable enough. And all we can do after that is to reflect on the experience, take what we can learn from it, and try to apply those lessons on some other title.”

Ono also said that there are no plans for a new entry in the Darkstalkers series as the company didn't manage to hit our sales targets for Darkstalkers Resurrection”.
