Castlevania renewed for second season on Netflix

Netflix’s anime adaptation of cult game series Castlevania will return for a second series.

Deadline reports that the Wow! Unlimited Media’s Frederator Studios production will see its run time upped to eight episodes next time out, having been limited to just four episodes for the existing series.

Season One stars Graham McTavish (The Hobbit) as Dracula, Richard Armitage (also The Hobbit) as Trevor Belmont, James Callis (Battlestar Galactica) as Alucard, Emily Swallow (Supernatural) as Lisa and Matt Frewer (Orphan Black) as The Bishop. It follows the exploits of the surviving member of the Belmont clan as he attempts to save Europe from the famous vampire.

The first series has gone down well with critics.

It’s been said before that when the biggest complaint you have regarding a particular piece of entertainment is that there’s not enough of it, that’s a pretty good sign that it’s something special,” Den of Geek wrote. While that’s mostly the case here, it is undoubtedly disappointing that Netflix’s Castlevania ends just when you’re starting to appreciate how special it truly is.

Still, if the choice is between a truncated take on this classic gaming franchise or Konami’s approach to the Castlevania series – i.e. absolutely nothing in recent memory – I’ll gladly take one of the best American adult animated series since HBO’s Spawn.”

The Verge added: Castlevania is ripe with potential, but also burdened with cliches. And so, it feels after four episodes like a show at a crossroads. Will it become just another tortured video game adaptation? Or will it rise to be something more?”

It has also amassed a rating of 8.3/10 on IMDB.

The producer of the series, Adi Shankar, confirmed last week that his next project will be a series based on Ubisoft IP Assassin’s Creed.

I’m happy to let you guys know that I’ve selected my next project,”he said. I played the first edition of Assassin’s Creed the year I moved to Los Angeles to pursue my dream.

At that moment I knew absolutely no one in the industry and could never have imagined that one day Ubisoft would ask me to take the world of Assassin’s Creed and create an original story set in it as an anime series. If anyone tells you not to follow your passion in life they are wrong.”
