Studio now part of CD Projekt Group; working on unannounced project

The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk are massive titles on PC and console, but mobile has been an area in which CD Projekt has been lacking – until now. The CD Projekt Group has announced it will be working closely with Spokko to develop an as-yet unannounced mobile title.

The deal sees Spokko move under the CD Projekt Group banner, while remaining independent, with the larger company holding a majority stake in the smaller. Remaining shares are retained by unnamed ‘key personnel’ working directly on development and concepts for the game. Spokko gains access to CD Projekt Red’s intellectual property and ‘commercial muscle’ as part of the agreement.

“We have known the people behind Spokko for several years,” said Adam Kiciński, president of the CD Projekt Group, “They approached us with an interesting idea based on one of our brands – an idea we decided to invest in. We want to expand our business with innovative concepts and solutions, and the vision presented to us by the Spokko team represents an entirely novel creative angle. The new studio will be largely independent. We intend to provide it with a distinct identity and creative autonomy, in line with the philosophy which has long guided the actions of the CD PROJEKT Group.”

While the press release circulating positions Spokko as a brand new entity, the fact is the studio has existed in some form or another for a decade now, starting out in 2008 under the guidance of Maciej Weiss and Rafal Staszewski. A quick check of the URL on the Wayback Machine shows plenty of activity over the years, and a Tumblr dedicated to the studio (now deleted) talks about titles such as Save Kitty and Tap of War.

“We were elated to hear that CD PROJEKT believes in our idea,” said Weiss, who remains in charge alongside Staszewski, “Our cooperation with Rafał and other members of the team goes back a long way. We have substantial experience with casual game development, but this time around we want to work on a far more advanced and ambitious project, offering new possibilities for gamers. It’s a very exciting challenge.”
