Classic Mini NES going back into production, Nintendo confirms

UPDATED: Nintendo of Europe has since confirmed on Twitter that the Classic Mini: NES will also be returning to Europe next summer in addition to the US.

Nintendo’s highly-sought after Classic Mini: NES is to go back into production, Nintendo of Japan tweeted this morning. The tweet, which Eurogamer has translated, reads: "Nintendo has decided to restart production of the Famicom Mini in 2018. We will announce sales dates at a later time."

We’ve reached out to Nintendo UK to see whether stock will make its way here as well, but Business Wire has confirmed that sales of the Classic Mini NES will resume in North America next summer.

Business Wire also states that Nintendo will continue to sell the Classic Mini: SNES well into 2018, despite originally saying it would cease production at the end of this calendar year.

The Classic Mini NES was one of the most sought after pieces of hardware last year, with stock quickly selling out across the world. Indeed, Nintendo of America’s Reggie Fils-Aime admitted that demand for the miniature retro console was "greater than we anticipated."

"We saw the NES Classic as an opportunity to engage with millennials, gen-Xers, boomers, people who had played those games back in the day, but life had gone by, and they had somewhat walked away from gaming,” he said in an interview to CNET.

Its successor, the Classic Mini: SNES, is proving to be equally popular, with pre-orders already sold out in the UK, despite Nintendo promising to improve stock supply this time round.

The Classic Mini: SNES launches at the end of the month on September 29th.
