COD: Advanced Warfare is 2014’s best selling US game, but sales dip up to 27% year-on-year

Activision’s Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare is the best selling game to date in the US, although analysts suggest that sales are down on predecessor Ghosts.

The publisher says NPD data shows the latest COD is the best selling 2014 title on PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360 and the single best selling console title. It was also the best selling game in November.

However, StreetInsider reports that Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Olson says that the game has fallen 27 per cent short of the sales posted by predecessor Ghosts.

"This is disappointing data following first week Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare sales showing a year-on-year increase,” Olsen said. NPD data does not include digital copies or international sales, which, if included, would lessen the year-on-year decline, but we believe this data suggests potential for Q4 revenue upside is now very low.”

The number stands somewhere between previous predictions, with pre-release sales decline estimates ranging from 15 per cent to 40 per cent.

MCV understands that the year-on-year dip is far less severe in the UK, standing at less than five per cent.

The game actually enjoyed a better UK launch week than Ghosts, although there were mitigating factors at play – notably that Advanced Warfare had a day longer on sale than Ghosts and that Ghosts launched a week later on Xbox One than on other formats last year, and was available on both next-gen consoles before the hardware had even been launched.
