DICE is bringing the Frostbite engine to mobiles

A version of DICE’s impressive Frostbite engine is being developed for mobile and tablet platforms.

It’s good news for mobile gamers, certainly, but also a disappointing development for Wii U owners who are now left with the reality of Nintendo’s machine being the only major platform to be shunned by the software.

We learnt a lot developing our first engine so with Frostbite 2 our team completely re-engineered all major systems to address issues and improve overall quality of our games,” the Frostbite website says.

We also took this opportunity to make better use of existing console resources as well as take advantage of high-end multicore PCs which we firmly believed would be the base for all future platforms.

One of our most exciting current projects is called Frostbite Go, a mobile division empowering EA game developers with Frostbite’s proven excellent workflows and features to bring true Frostbite experiences to all major mobile platforms.”

Earlier this month DICE’s technical director Johan Andersson admitted that the studio had abandoned plans to bring Frostbite to Wii U, stating: "Frostbite 3 has never been running on Wii U. We did some tests with not too promising results with Frostbite 2 and chose not to go down that path."

Frostbite 3 will b e debuted with the release of Battlefield 4 later this year.
